Vietnam's major milestone in chip manufacturing

A look at the infrastructure and operational demands behind Vietnam's ambition to take on chip fabrication.

Semiconductor wafer fabrication equipment

Vietnam is seeking to move deeper into the global semiconductor supply chain through domestic chip-fabrication capability. The transition is significant because fabrication is among the most capital-intensive and technically demanding stages in semiconductor production.

A successful fab depends on much more than equipment. It requires a mature ecosystem for materials, utilities, facilities engineering, process control and highly specialised talent.

What a fabrication facility requires

Modern wafer production is a tightly controlled sequence of deposition, photolithography, etching, cleaning and measurement. Each stage must be repeatable at extremely small dimensions.

  • Stable, high-capacity power and ultra-pure water systems
  • Cleanroom and vibration-control infrastructure
  • Process engineering, yield management and metrology expertise

The long-term opportunity for Vietnam is to connect fabrication with local IC design, packaging, testing and equipment services. Building that capability will require sustained investment and collaboration across government, universities and industry.
